For any one who is not yet aware, there are a new set of laws that have been passed aimed at rouge cyclists. The laws are said to even the ledger between road users, and to some extent they do. There will be penalties for hit and run, dangerous riding, and careless riding. If you have cycled trough the city as I do you will notice that there is often complete disregard for all other road users, cyclists vs pedestrians vs trams vs tour buses vs cars vs taxis vs white vans vs other cyclists. The same lycra warrior who runs the red light is often delayed at the next set by pedestrians (perhaps on their iPhone) ambling out on to the road against their own red light.
A terrible state of affairs
Although I welcome the laws, the penalties may be a touch harsh. A cyclist can be jailed for 7 days for property damage if they fail to stop?! There is also a range of fines that can be issued also for a range of offences. I wonder what the penalty is for flinging open a car door in to a cyclist? what if the cyclist clips the flung door and fails to stop? I wonder how work would deal with the phone call "sorry I can't come in this week, I'm in jail"
